Blue Sky Multiples refer to a measure of multiples of pre-tax earnings which is used to estimate part of the fair market value of an auto dealership. It is one of the key inputs business valuators apply in estimating the fair market value of an automobile dealership or franchise. The blue sky multiples vary across auto brands and franchises. In the United States, the sources of the blue sky multiples include firms such as Haig Partners and Kerrigan Advisors which publish blue sky multiples of vehicle brands and franchises quarterly. The multiples for the vehicle brands and franchises are not static but fluctuate year-to-year. To estimate the fair market value of an automobile dealership, business valuators add the blue sky value (the blue sky multiple multiplied by pre-tax earnings) to the net asset value of tangible assets of the business computed from the adjusted balance sheet.
