The Relief from Royalty Method is one of the business valuation methods under the income approach which is used for the valuation of intangible assets such as brand names, franchises, and trademarks. The method is based on the premise that the only value that a purchaser of the asset receives is the exemption from paying a royalty for its use. There are databases in Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Canada, USA and other jurisdictions that regularly publish prevailing royalties across industries and business sectors for brands, trademarks, franchises, etc which offer comparables for the intangible asset being valued. Under the relief from royalty method, business valuators estimate the fair market value of an intangible asset by quantifying the present value of the stream of the royalty payments that the owner of the intangible asset is exempted from or "relieved" from paying. First, the analysts identify the royalty percentage which is applied to the forecast revenue. Second, the analysts compute the discount rate. Third, the analyst discounts the royalties by the discount rate to arrive at the fair market value of the intangible asset. The Relief from Royalty Method is also referred to as the Royalty Avoidance Method.
